The SO booking number follows the format SO + 7 digits — for example, SO2313285. This is unique to Kern County and returns an exact match instantly. If you have it from any court paperwork or bond documents, use it first.
Search by Full Legal Name
Enter the full legal name — not a nickname or shortened version. Partial letters return broader results lists. For common names, cross-reference the date of birth to confirm you have the right person. If the full name returns nothing, try the last name only with different spelling variations.

What Is a Kern County SO Booking Number?
The SO booking number is the primary identifier for everyone in KCSO detention. Without it, sending money, addressing mail, and searching the roster all become significantly harder.

Every Kern County booking number starts with the letters SO followed by exactly seven digits. The “SO” stands for Sheriff’s Office. Central Receiving Facility — First Stop After Arrest

Eastern Kern County — Mojave and Ridgecrest Jails
If the arrest occurred outside Bakersfield in eastern Kern County, the person may be at one of two smaller receiving facilities — not at Central Receiving or Lerdo:

Name Not Showing Up? 5 Specific Reasons
A blank result in the KCSO roster does not confirm the person is not in custody. Here are the five specific reasons this happens — each with a different solution.
1. Still Being Processed at Central Receiving
Booking — fingerprinting, medical screening, classification — takes time after arrest. During that processing window, the person may be physically inside the jail but not yet visible in the online roster. Call Central Receiving directly at (661) 868-6850 for a live status check rather than relying solely on the online search.
2. Transferred to Lerdo — Roster Hasn’t Updated
After the first court appearance, people move from Central Receiving to one of the Lerdo facilities. The roster entry may not update instantly. If the arrest was a few days ago, call the Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility at (661) 391-7900 to confirm current housing rather than assuming the person is gone from the system.
3. Transferred to CDCR State Prison
If the person was recently sentenced on a felony and can no longer be found in the KCSO roster, they may have transferred to CDCR state custody. North Kern State Prison in Delano is the primary reception center for Kern County felony convictions entering the state system. Search CDCR at inmatelocator.cdcr.ca.gov — you will need their CDCR number or full legal name and date of birth.
4. KCSO System Accuracy Limitation

Every person in KCSO custody has a commissary account for approved purchases. Deposits come from outside — money is not handed to the inmate directly. Per the official KCSO page, the Access Corrections system is the designated deposit method for Kern County facilities.

Mail — Critical Policy Change Effective June 2025
⚠ Mail Update — June 2025 (Source: kernsheriff.org/inmate-search): Effective June 1, 2025, KCSO stopped accepting physical personal mail at jail facilities. All personal mail is now scanned and delivered digitally via inmate kiosks and tablets. Mail sent to facility addresses will be returned.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office Inmate Phone System has changed. Accounts are now set up through Securus Technologies at securustech.net. Previous provider accounts may not work.
All calls are outgoing from the inmate — they call you. To receive calls, create a Friends and Family account at securustech.net and fund it with calling credit. Video visitation is also available through Securus — sessions can be scheduled remotely. Test your connection before any scheduled session. All calls are subject to monitoring and recording per KCSO policy.
How to Visit at Kern County Detention Facilities
Before You Go — Call First
Always call the specific facility the morning of your planned visit to confirm it has not been suspended due to lockdown, inmate disciplinary status, classification review, or transfer. Driving to Lerdo from outside Bakersfield without calling is a common problem families face. The KCSO main Detentions line is (661) 391-7500.
Lerdo Minimum Facility — Contact Rules
Per the official KCSO Minimum Security page: any and all physical contact during visiting is prohibited. Any contact between visitors and inmates — regardless of type — will result in termination of the visit. Inmates are generally allowed one visit of at least one hour per week with a maximum of four visitors per table.
General Visiting Requirements
