Kern County Inmate Search — Find Someone in Kern County Jail or a California State Prison
Kern County has two separate correctional systems — the KCSO county jail roster and the CDCR state prison locator. This guide covers which to search first, how the SO booking number works, why someone may not appear, and the June 2025 mail policy change most families don’t know about.
Statistics sourced from KCSO Detentions Bureau public page. Figures approximate and subject to change.
To find someone in Kern County Jail, go to kernsheriff.org/inmate-search and search by full legal name or SO booking number. The free KCSO roster covers all six county detention facilities. Important: per the official KCSO site, results may not always reflect the most current information — call (661) 391-7500 for urgent confirmation. If the person was sentenced and transferred to state prison, use the CDCR Inmate Locator at inmatelocator.cdcr.ca.gov instead.
Recently Arrested in Kern County? Start Here
If the arrest happened within the last day or two, the person is almost certainly in KCSO county custody — not yet in any state system. Follow this order before searching.
Which System Holds Your Person? — Search the Right Database
Kern County correctional records are maintained across two separate systems that share no data with each other. Searching the wrong one produces empty results even when the person is in custody.
KCSO County Jail
People awaiting trial, serving shorter sentences, or awaiting transfer to state prison. Operated by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office across six facilities.
Includes: Central Receiving, Lerdo Complex, Mojave Jail, Ridgecrest Jail.
CDCR State Prison
People convicted of felonies transferred to California state custody. Four CDCR facilities operate in Kern County — North Kern, Kern Valley, CCI Tehachapi, and Wasco.
Federal BOP
Federal charges prosecuted in U.S. District Court. Not visible in KCSO or CDCR searches — completely separate federal system.
How to Use the KCSO Jail Roster — Step by Step
Open the Official KCSO Inmate Search
Go to kernsheriff.org/inmate-search — the official free roster run by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. No account or payment required. Enter at least 3 characters to begin, per the site’s own instructions.
Search by SO Booking Number — Fastest Method
The SO booking number follows the format SO + 7 digits — for example, SO2313285. This is unique to Kern County and returns an exact match instantly. If you have it from any court paperwork or bond documents, use it first.
Search by Full Legal Name
Enter the full legal name — not a nickname or shortened version. Partial letters return broader results lists. For common names, cross-reference the date of birth to confirm you have the right person. If the full name returns nothing, try the last name only with different spelling variations.
Read the Results — Note the SO Number
A match shows name, SO booking number, date of birth, current facility, charges, and bail amount. Write down the SO booking number immediately — you need it for every next step: sending money, addressing mail, and contacting the jail about the specific person.
If Nothing Appears — Do Not Stop Here
A blank result does not confirm the person is not in custody. The KCSO system has an acknowledged accuracy limitation per their own website. Check the Kern County Courts portal at portal.kern.courts.ca.gov, or call the Detentions Bureau at (661) 391-7500 directly.
What Is a Kern County SO Booking Number?
The SO booking number is the primary identifier for everyone in KCSO detention. Without it, sending money, addressing mail, and searching the roster all become significantly harder.
SO Number Format and What It Looks Like
Every Kern County booking number starts with the letters SO followed by exactly seven digits. The “SO” stands for Sheriff’s Office. This identifier is specific to Kern County jail — it is different from a CDCR number, court case number, or arrest report number. Do not try to use an SO number in the CDCR search — it will not work.
| Identifier | Format | Where to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| SO Booking Number | SO + 7 digits (e.g. SO2313285) | KCSO roster, money deposits, mail addressing |
| CDCR Number | Different format — assigned at state intake | CDCR Inmate Locator only |
| Court Case Number | Assigned by court clerk | Kern County Courts portal |
| Arrest Report Number | Police report number from arresting agency | Not used for jail or prison searches |
The SO booking number appears on any court paperwork, bond documents, or in the KCSO roster results once you find the person by name. If you don’t have it, search by name first and note the SO number from the results. To request it directly, call the Detentions Bureau at (661) 391-7500 with the full legal name and date of birth.
Kern County Jail Facilities — Where Is Your Person?
Kern County does not have one jail — it has six separate facilities. People move between them depending on their case status. Driving to the wrong one means a wasted trip. Always check the facility field in the KCSO roster before traveling.
Central Receiving Facility — First Stop After Arrest
The Central Receiving Facility at 1415 Truxtun Ave, Bakersfield, CA 93301 is the primary intake point for people arrested in the Bakersfield area. Per the official KCSO Detentions page, this is where newly booked individuals are held pending release or their first court appearance. If the arrest just happened, this is almost always where the person will be first. Phone: (661) 868-6850
After the first court appearance, if the person remains in custody, they are generally transferred to one of the Lerdo facilities — and the location in the KCSO roster will update to reflect that.
The Lerdo Complex — After First Court Appearance
The Lerdo Detention Complex sits approximately 15 miles north of downtown Bakersfield on Industrial Farm Road. It contains four separate facilities at different security and classification levels:
| Facility | Address | Phone |
|---|---|---|
| Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility | 17695 Industrial Farm Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93308 | (661) 391-7900 |
| Lerdo Max/Med Facility | 17645 Industrial Farm Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93308 | (661) 391-2064 |
| Lerdo Minimum Facility | 17635 Industrial Farm Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93308 | (661) 391-7802 |
| Lerdo Justice Facility | 17801 Industrial Farm Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93308 | (661) 391-3100 |
Always confirm the specific Lerdo facility in the KCSO roster before traveling — a person can move between these facilities, and the building you need may not be the one you assume.
Eastern Kern County — Mojave and Ridgecrest Jails
If the arrest occurred outside Bakersfield in eastern Kern County, the person may be at one of two smaller receiving facilities — not at Central Receiving or Lerdo:
| Facility | Address | Phone |
|---|---|---|
| Mojave Jail | 1771 Highway 58, Mojave, CA 93501 | (661) 824-7147 |
| Ridgecrest Jail | 128 E. Coso Ave, Ridgecrest, CA 93555 | (760) 384-5800 |
Name Not Showing Up? 5 Specific Reasons
A blank result in the KCSO roster does not confirm the person is not in custody. Here are the five specific reasons this happens — each with a different solution.
1. Still Being Processed at Central Receiving
Booking — fingerprinting, medical screening, classification — takes time after arrest. During that processing window, the person may be physically inside the jail but not yet visible in the online roster. Call Central Receiving directly at (661) 868-6850 for a live status check rather than relying solely on the online search.
2. Transferred to Lerdo — Roster Hasn’t Updated
After the first court appearance, people move from Central Receiving to one of the Lerdo facilities. The roster entry may not update instantly. If the arrest was a few days ago, call the Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility at (661) 391-7900 to confirm current housing rather than assuming the person is gone from the system.
3. Transferred to CDCR State Prison
If the person was recently sentenced on a felony and can no longer be found in the KCSO roster, they may have transferred to CDCR state custody. North Kern State Prison in Delano is the primary reception center for Kern County felony convictions entering the state system. Search CDCR at inmatelocator.cdcr.ca.gov — you will need their CDCR number or full legal name and date of birth.
4. KCSO System Accuracy Limitation
This comes directly from the official KCSO website: per a notice on the official KCSO Inmate Information page (kernsheriff.org/Inmate_Info), results may not always reflect the most current or accurate information due to recent system changes between partner agencies. If the online search fails and you believe the person is in custody, the KCSO recommends also checking the Kern County Courts portal at portal.kern.courts.ca.gov, or calling (661) 391-7500 directly.
5. Released, Bailed Out, or Charges Dropped
The KCSO roster shows only people currently in custody. If bail was posted, charges were dismissed, or a short sentence was completed, the person will not appear. Call the Detentions Bureau at (661) 391-7500 with the full legal name and approximate arrest date for confirmation.
CDCR State Prisons in Kern County — How to Find Them
Kern County is home to four California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation facilities — more than most California counties. If the person was sentenced on a felony in Kern County Superior Court, one of these facilities may now hold them. These are under state authority, not the Sheriff’s Office, and require a completely different search tool.
Use the CDCR Inmate Locator at inmatelocator.cdcr.ca.gov — search by name or CDCR number.
| Facility | Location | Type | Phone |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Kern State Prison | Delano, CA 93216 | Reception center — new Kern County convictions often start here | (661) 721-2345 |
| Kern Valley State Prison | Delano, CA 93216 | Level IV high-security men’s prison | (661) 721-6300 |
| California Correctional Institution | Tehachapi, CA 93581 | Multiple security levels | (661) 822-4402 |
| Wasco State Prison-Reception Center | Wasco, CA 93280 | Reception center for Central Valley courts | (661) 758-8400 |
Once someone is in CDCR custody, the KCSO has no further jurisdiction over their records. CDCR phone calls, visiting, and money systems are completely separate from KCSO.

What Information Does the KCSO Roster Show?
When you find a matching record in the Kern County jail roster, here is what is typically available. Knowing what to expect helps you confirm you have the right person and plan next steps.
The KCSO roster does not show projected release dates, CDCR numbers, court hearing dates, or attorney information. For court dates, check the Kern County Courts portal at portal.kern.courts.ca.gov. For someone in CDCR state custody, use inmatelocator.cdcr.ca.gov.

How to Send Money — Access Corrections
ℹ Last Checked: August 2026 · Source: kernsheriff.org/inmate-search
Deposit providers, fees, and kiosk locations are subject to change. Confirm current details at accesscorrections.com or by calling (866) 345-1884 before sending funds.
Every person in KCSO custody has a commissary account for approved purchases. Deposits come from outside — money is not handed to the inmate directly. Per the official KCSO page, the Access Corrections system is the designated deposit method for Kern County facilities.
Deposit options: online at accesscorrections.com, by phone at (866) 345-1884, or in cash at kiosks located at the Central Receiving Facility and the Lerdo Max/Med facility. Always include the inmate’s full legal name and SO booking number — using a wrong booking number can misdirect funds.

Mail — Critical Policy Change Effective June 2025
⚠ Mail Update — June 2025 (Source: kernsheriff.org/inmate-search): Effective June 1, 2025, KCSO stopped accepting physical personal mail at jail facilities. All personal mail is now scanned and delivered digitally via inmate kiosks and tablets. Mail sent to facility addresses will be returned.
New Mailing Address — All Personal Mail
All personal mail must now be sent to the Securus Digital Mail Center. The seven-digit SO booking number is required on every piece of mail — without it, mail for common names cannot be routed correctly.
C/O Securus Digital Mail Center
PO Box 25397
Tampa, FL 33622
Legal and privileged mail from attorneys is not affected by this change — legal correspondence should still be sent directly to the facility. Confirm current legal mail procedures with the specific facility before sending.
How to Set Up Phone Calls — Securus Technologies
ℹ Phone System Has Changed (Source: kernsheriff.org/inmate-search)
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office Inmate Phone System has changed. Accounts are now set up through Securus Technologies at securustech.net. Previous provider accounts may not work.
All calls are outgoing from the inmate — they call you. To receive calls, create a Friends and Family account at securustech.net and fund it with calling credit. Video visitation is also available through Securus — sessions can be scheduled remotely. Test your connection before any scheduled session. All calls are subject to monitoring and recording per KCSO policy.
How to Visit at Kern County Detention Facilities
Before You Go — Call First
Always call the specific facility the morning of your planned visit to confirm it has not been suspended due to lockdown, inmate disciplinary status, classification review, or transfer. Driving to Lerdo from outside Bakersfield without calling is a common problem families face. The KCSO main Detentions line is (661) 391-7500.
Lerdo Minimum Facility — Contact Rules
Per the official KCSO Minimum Security page: any and all physical contact during visiting is prohibited. Any contact between visitors and inmates — regardless of type — will result in termination of the visit. Inmates are generally allowed one visit of at least one hour per week with a maximum of four visitors per table.
General Visiting Requirements
Across all KCSO facilities: arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled visit time. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Leave electronics, bags, and valuables in your vehicle. Contact the specific facility to confirm their current dress code before traveling — individual facilities may have additional requirements beyond the baseline.
CDCR State Prison Visiting in Kern County
If the person is in a CDCR facility — North Kern, Kern Valley, CCI Tehachapi, or Wasco — visiting rules are set by CDCR, not KCSO, and are completely different. North Kern and Wasco visiting is generally Saturday and Sunday, 8 AM to 3 PM, per official CDCR records. Always verify current hours directly with the facility before traveling — schedules change and confirmation saves wasted trips.
