VINELink Not Working?Fixes and Alternatives
If VINELink is unavailable or an inmate is not appearing in your search, the problem may be a temporary outage, a non-participating county, federal custody, or a coverage gap — each with a different solution. This guide covers the most common causes and what to try instead.
VINE 24/7 phone service — available when the website is unavailable
If VINELink is not loading, try the VINE phone service at 1-877-894-8477, available 24 hours a day. If you can access VINELink but an inmate is not appearing, the problem is likely coverage — the facility may not participate in VINE, the person may be in federal custody which VINE does not cover, or the record may no longer be active. Each situation has a different fix listed below.
What to Do Right Now
If VINELink is unavailable or not returning results, work through these steps in order.
-
1Try the VINE Phone Service — 1-877-894-8477
The VINE toll-free phone line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can search for an offender’s custody status and register for notifications by phone when the website is unavailable. Have the offender’s full legal name and state ready when you call.

2Check Whether the Facility Participates in VINE
On VINELink, select the state and look for the county or facility. If it is listed as non-participating, VINELink cannot provide information for that jurisdiction — this is not a technical error. Contact the facility directly for custody status.
Non-participating = call the facility -
3For Federal Inmates — Use BOP, Not VINELink
VINELink does not cover federal Bureau of Prisons inmates. If the charges were federal — prosecuted in U.S. District Court — go to bop.gov/inmateloc instead. For ICE immigration detainees, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator at locator.ice.gov. No amount of searching VINELink will return a federal inmate.
Federal: bop.gov · ICE: locator.ice.gov -
4Call the Facility Directly
The county jail or state prison where the person is held is always an option for real-time custody confirmation. Call with the full legal name and date of birth. This works regardless of whether VINELink is functional and is recommended by VINE itself for situations where the online data may not reflect the most current status.

5Search the State DOC Database Directly
For state prison inmates, the state Department of Corrections database is a separate system from VINELink and may show results independently. The major state DOC systems are linked in the search section below.

9 Reasons VINELink May Not Be Showing Results
A blank result or unavailable page does not always mean the same thing. Find the reason that matches your situation.
Temporary Outage or Maintenance
VINELink may be temporarily unavailable due to scheduled maintenance or an unplanned outage. If the website is not loading at all, try again after a short wait or use the phone service at 1-877-894-8477.
▶ Fix: Phone service 1-877-894-8477 or try again laterNon-Participating County or Facility
VINE coverage varies across the United States. While many states participate, not every county within a participating state is connected to VINE. Some jurisdictions have not signed a VINE contract. If you select your state and the county or facility does not appear, it is non-participating — VINELink cannot provide records for that area.
▶ Fix: Contact the facility directly by phonePerson Is in Federal Custody — VINE Does Not Cover BOP
VINELink does not receive information about federal Bureau of Prisons inmates. This applies to anyone convicted of a federal crime prosecuted in U.S. District Court. Searching VINELink for a federal inmate will never return a result — this is by design, not a bug or outage.
▶ Fix: Use bop.gov/inmateloc for federal inmatesPerson Is in ICE Immigration Detention
ICE immigration detention is handled through a separate system from both VINELink and the Bureau of Prisons. If you are searching for someone held by ICE, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator at locator.ice.gov rather than VINELink.
▶ Fix: locator.ice.govPerson Has Been Released
VINELink shows people currently in custody or recently released. If enough time has passed since a release, the record may no longer be active. A missing record after a known release is not a malfunction — it may mean the person is no longer in the system.
▶ Fix: Call the facility to confirm release dateName or ID Does Not Match the Record
VINELink searches against the legal name on file. A spelling variation, hyphenated surname, middle name, maiden name, nickname, or wrong offender ID can all prevent a match. Try the last name only, then scan the results. If you have a booking number from court documents, use that for a more direct search.
▶ Fix: Try last name only, check spelling, use booking IDNotification Emails Going to Spam
VINE notification emails come from vine@globalnotifications.com. Check your spam or junk folder for this address and add it to your safe senders list to prevent future filtering.
▶ Fix: Check spam for vine@globalnotifications.comThe Agency Has Not Yet Transmitted the Record
VINE information is not necessarily real-time. Participating agencies transmit custody data to VINE on their own schedules, which vary by facility. A recent booking, transfer, or release may not appear immediately even if the facility does participate. This is different from an outage — VINELink may be working fine while a specific record is simply not yet available.
▶ Fix: Call the facility directly for current statusYour State Uses a Different Notification System
Some states have transitioned to their own victim notification systems separate from VINELink. If VINELink consistently shows no results for your state, check whether the state has its own portal. Check your state’s Department of Corrections or victim services agency website for the current notification system in use.
▶ Fix: Check state DOC website for local notification systemNot Receiving Notifications — How to Fix Each Type
Check spam and junk folders. Look for emails from vine@globalnotifications.com and add it to your safe senders list. If you use a mail service that aggressively filters unknown senders, consider switching to text or phone notifications as a more reliable alternative.
Verify your number is correctly registered on your VINELink account. Check that call-screening or do-not-disturb settings are not blocking calls from unknown numbers, as VINE may call from a number your phone does not recognize.
Go to your phone’s Settings → Apps → VINELink → Notifications and verify push notifications are enabled. If the app is not loading at all, try reinstalling it or switch to email or SMS notifications through vinelink.com.
Log in to vinelink.com and confirm your registration is still active for the offender you are tracking. If the offender’s custody status changed and no further changes are expected, alerts may have stopped. Re-register if needed.
Important: VINE information is not necessarily real-time. Update frequency varies by participating agency and facility, so a custody change may not appear or trigger a notification immediately. For urgent situations, contact the facility directly rather than relying solely on VINE alerts — VINE’s own documentation recommends this.
What VINELink Covers — And What Requires a Different System
| Situation | VINELink Covers? | Alternative if Not |
|---|---|---|
| State prison inmates in participating states | Generally yes | State DOC database directly |
| County jail inmates in participating counties | Yes, when county is connected | County sheriff’s office directly |
| Federal Bureau of Prisons inmates | No — never | bop.gov/inmateloc |
| ICE immigration detainees | No — separate system | locator.ice.gov |
| Non-participating counties | No — not connected | County sheriff or facility directly |
| Juvenile offenders | Varies by state | State juvenile justice system — generally not public |
| Historical records (released long ago) | Limited — recent activity only | State DOC or county court records |
Federal Cases — DOJ Victim Notification System (VNS)
If the case was prosecuted in federal court, VINELink is not the correct system. For sentenced federal inmates, search the BOP Inmate Locator at bop.gov/inmateloc.
For federal crime victims seeking notifications about a federal case, the Department of Justice operates a Victim Notification System (VNS) — a separate program from VINELink that covers federal prosecutions. Contact the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the district where the case was prosecuted for information on enrolling in or accessing federal victim notifications.
For ICE immigration detention, the relevant search tool is the ICE Online Detainee Locator at locator.ice.gov — this is separate from both VINELink and the BOP locator.
Quick reference: State custody → VINELink. Federal sentenced inmates → bop.gov/inmateloc. Federal victim notifications → DOJ VNS via U.S. Attorney’s Office. ICE detention → locator.ice.gov.
How to Register for VINE Custody Notifications
Go to vinelink.com, select your state, search for the offender by name or ID, and click Register on their profile. Choose your notification method — phone, email, text message, or in-app alert — and complete registration. You will be assigned a PIN. Keep this PIN — you may need it to acknowledge automated notification calls. You can also register by calling 1-877-894-8477.
Once registered, you will receive an alert when the offender’s custody status changes — releases, transfers, or escapes, depending on what the participating agency reports to VINE. The types of status changes that generate notifications may vary by state and facility.
